Homelessness - The Never-Ending Story

Thumb less fortunate

The United Nations Consensus was taken in 2005, which was 9 years ago! And how accurate is that finding of 500 million homeless people in the world? Does it take into consideration people who live in rural towns/villages? Does it take into consideration the unseen? Does it take into account poor people displaced due to sporting events? Does it take into account people being displaced due to war? How many wars have there been in the past 9 years to add to the population of homeless people? Does this take into account the ever growing number of street children?

Towards a new Golden Age

At the launch of Nesta's book “Our Work Here Is Done: Visions of a Robot Economy”, Carlota Perez described how our current economic troubles are an inevitable and necessary part of the process of technological change. We are at a turning point: if we get it right, there could be a new Golden Age. But for this to happen, there needs to be radical change in current social structures and norms. Do we have the vision and courage to make this happen?

Private Wealth, Public Squalor: America’s Dilemma

Thumb 32847777 bc041fabdb o

A new reality is only beginning to creep into our political discussion: America has too much private wealth and too much public squalor. We have staggering public investment needs: in building a modern, sustainable infrastructure; in education, from pre-K to affordable college; in public research and development; in a manufacturing strategy linking worker training with commitments to capture a lead in markets of the future, like the green industrial revolution that is already beginning to sweep the world. And we can afford this by raising taxes on the rich and forcing the global corporations to pay their fair share of taxes.

Our New Gilded Age: Homeless Man Died of Cold Hunkered In Portable Toilet In the Richest Greediest Country in the World - by Abby Zimet

Thumb homeless man in snow 006

Police in Detroit have not yet identified a homeless man who died of exposure while trying to stay warm locked inside a portable toilet he had insulated with trash. The homeless man trying to stay warm locked inside a portable toilet - whose story horribly mirrors a death a few years ago in an abandoned warehouse, pictured on the front - died in an America of grotesquely and untenably rising inequality, according to “Capital in the Twenty-First Century,” a much-touted, Marxist-flavored, exquisitely argued book by (non-Marxist) French economist Thomas Piketty that has just hit #1 on Amazon. Perhaps it has struck a chord because it makes its arguments for greater equity in America so soundly, or perhaps it's simply that many people, seeing what's become of our nation and the part the 1% have played in that transformation, believe a homeless man dying of the cold in a toilet is obscene. Which, obviously, it is.

It sounds like a lottery winner’s wishlist – vintage wine, diamond necklaces and flights on a private jet. But these luxuries are in fact being enjoyed by teachers, thanks to an ‘aggressive and manipulative’ gift culture among parents at private schools. Families who believe they can curry favour with staff are showering them with £1,000 handbags and Savile Row suits as well as thousands of pounds in vouchers. Teachers are also being given cases of vintage wine and designer goods from Chanel, Prada, Mulberry and Tiffany as part of a ‘cut-throat flash-fest’.

Poverty Is Killing Us

According to a new study from the Brookings Institute, wealthy Americans are living considerably longer lives than Americans who are struggling with poverty. The report points out that the by the age of 55, the average American man in the top 10 percent of the income bracket can expect to live another 35 years or so. But, by the age of 55, the average man in the bottom 10 percent of the country's income bracket only has around 24 years left to live. The lifespan discrepancy between wealthy and poorer women is even worse. While these new findings are startling, they shouldn't be surprising. That's because poverty has a very, very long list of negative effects.

Thumb 2014 0424dt

Raising the minimum wage to its 1962 real level, $10.10, would, according to University of Massachusetts economist Arindrajit Dube, take 4.6 million additional people out of poverty and strike a blow against racial and gender inequality. If the minimum wage rose commensurate with the increase in productivity of the average U.S. worker since 1962, it would stand even higher, at a robust $17.20. This is why the "Fight for 15" demand is far from utopian. A $15 minimum wage would lower the existing poverty rate from 15.1 percent in the United States to less than 10 percent. Any effort to alleviate mass poverty must take on the right's systematic and successful disinformation campaign.

Food stamps -- now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP -- were a regular topic of conversation among my colleagues. Despite holding two or three jobs, there were still never enough hours to earn enough to eat enough. SNAP was on a lot of other American's minds as well -- the number of people using food stamps increased by 13% a year from 2008 to 2012. About 1 in 7 Americans get some of their food through SNAP. About 45% of food stamp benefits go to children.

Two thirds of people who took part in the British Heart Foundation (BHF) survey said they would like to eat more healthily but 42% of them said they cannot because it is too expensive. It follows the revelation that more than a million Britons are having to turn to food banks to have enough to eat.

The Corruption of Mainstream Media

The United States' mainstream media still pretend they are custodians of "serious journalism," but those claims continue to erode as the corporate press shies away from its duty to challenge propaganda emanating from various parts of the US government. The Pulitzer Prize is the big enchildada in the media world announced in a formal ceremony at the Pulitzer room in the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism on New York’s Morningside Heights. The journalists who win these prizes are recognized for life as “Pulitzer Prize Winners,” a sign that they reached the highest heights in the profession. It’s a ticket to raises and more recognition. I once was once told by a former dean of the same “J School” – where I taught as an adjunct – that they considered themselves the “Taj Mahal” of American Journalism. I didn’t have the heart to remind her that the original Taj was built as a tomb.

Colonialism Problems and Solutions

Thumb colonialism 1493

The idea or ideology of colonialism is nurtured by capitalist nations throughout the world with the enforcement of political, cultural and economic control over the weak nations of the world, in order to exploit them for pure self-enrichment - looking for trade, but basically sucking out the wealth of the countries it has pre-ordained for its dealings. So colonialism it is a major part of capitalism for the purpose of securing financial, economical and power interests. To this end, also, billions of slaves have been trafficked to the Americas, for instance, to have cheap human resources as laborers on the plantations that were set up, in its wake raping nature and natives alike of a balanced relationship with the whole as here as pre-established, causing warfare at all levels, resulting in genocide and complete agony for all life.

This pattern of "environmental injustice" suggests that minorities may contend every day with disproportionate health risks from tailpipe exhaust or coal plant emissions.

The clear finding is that the U.S. is an oligarchy, no democratic country, at all. American democracy is a sham, no matter how much it's pumped by the oligarchs who run the country (and who control the nation's "news" media). The U.S., in other words, is basically similar to Russia or most other dubious "electoral" "democratic" countries. We weren't formerly, but we clearly are now. Today, after this exhaustive analysis of the data, “the preferences of the average American appear to have only a minuscule, near-zero, statistically non-significant impact upon public policy.” That's it, in a nutshell.

We have to stop taking these rites of passage that we’ve come to accept as ‘normal’ and ‘natural’ for granted and start providing alternatives that will support the youngsters to grow up to become whole human beings. The teenage years of a person’s life could be the most amazing, educational and creative years, where each person is supported to discover their full potential and begin the process of forming themselves as responsible members of society.

Such an adjustment would change the economic landscape from a political perspective quite drastically - whereas previously all huge corporations that can affect change through lobbying at the highest levels were owned by the elite in society - many big corporations would now be owned by the people and would become a source of effective economic influence and a vehicle for political participation on a level that simply did not exist before.

This gap has allowed for secrecy and rent-seeking. Instead of politics being a one-party system - in the sense that only one party is involved: the people - we are working with a three-party system - there is the people, there is the elected government officials and there is those with the financial means that participate in rent-seeking to influence policy to their own advantage, regardless of public opinion

We know that money is made out of thin air, there is no value inherently within the paper it’s made from, it’s simply a medium for commerce, and within this we the people give it meaning. So saying there is not enough money is a scapegoat for admitting to the fact that some want more than others, and will do what it takes to make this continue to happen as it is and has been a reality for most of our recorded history. All are responsible within this ignorance we have accepted and allowed where some go with nothing and some go with enough, we all live here and so accept this money system as it is now, so we all have to face the consequences and change the outcomes to be best for all. It’s on each one being a part of this change because nothing will not change until we stand up within ourselves and change who we are from within to the without.

Why We don’t have Human Rights – Yet

One thing that we could make an effort to realize is that Human Rights at the moment is not Who We Are, we are Human Wrongs, we have to work to become Right and only when WE Become Human Rights, we can have them, we can’t have what We are Not. The only Freedom we have ever had, was the one to choose to do what is Right, to Become Human Rights and end all the harm once and for all. This world is Our Creation, it’s not a playfield because we have long taken the fun out of it and it’s not a place where It’s All Good, that is another of the harmful delusions we hold, murder, rape, violence and all the abuses we accept Are Not Good and so it’s about time we abandon both the delusions and our Moral Relativism to realize that the work to build Human Rights is an inside job, where we accept that The Only Way Out is Within and move together to do the required work so that as We Become Human Rights, we can live them, reap them for ourselves and others Equally.

It is our collectively accepted gullibility to believe in this illusion of freedom that is justifying the continuation of the harmful consequential reality of our apparent 'free market' economic system. I say 'apparent', because even though many economists would claim that our current market system is 'free', they are actually just doing so because they know that words like 'free' have been given a special place in human being's minds and that we will immediately accept without question things that apparently honour 'freedom'. As specialist in economics Ha-Joon Chang eloquently explains in his book '23 Things they don't tell you about Capitalism', our society would never have evolved past child and slave labor (in theory)if it wasn't for government intervention - because, if our market system was truly 'free', things like human trafficking, child pornography, child labor and slave labor would all be 'legal'.
