If we want to have any chance of changing this world, we have to start with what we are subjecting our children and young adults to. We have to stop taking these rites of passage that we’ve come to accept as ‘normal’ and ‘natural’ for granted and start providing alternatives that will support the youngsters to grow up to become whole human beings. The teenage years of a person’s life could be the most amazing, educational and creative years, where each person is supported to discover their full potential and begin the process of forming themselves as responsible members of society.
The proposal suggests that every citizen of a country become shareholder of human rights companies (such as water provision, electricity, telecommunications, media) and natural resource companies (eg. mining companies) in their country, under the principle that such points should never be owned by private persons as they should operate in the benefit of the whole of society. Such an adjustment would change the economic landscape from a political perspective quite drastically - whereas previously all huge corporations that can affect change through lobbying at the highest levels were owned by the elite in society - many big corporations would now be owned by the people and would become a source of effective economic influence and a vehicle for political participation on a level that simply did not exist before.
If you can see both the need for change and the unnecessary damage a revolution or a war would bring us all, consider another alternative, like redesigning our economics models, introducing a model where everyone wins (it’s this or the pitchforks? – note to the One Percenters), where we defuse the anger by giving to each other without coercion what we need to live a dignified life, a new inclusive model where all parts and their needs are taken into account, consider how Life could be for All with a Living Income Guaranteed, it means we grant a Living, a Life to All, not a scrawny, pathetic survivalist life, no, a Dignified Life, we make sure everyone can expand their access to choice, to Life itself and in one go, as we come together, the pitchforks will be put down to rebuild a world we can be proud of.
And this is exactly what an implementation of a Living Income Guaranteed would do: ensure that each one has a dignified income, in other words - ensuring there are no more individuals with 'low' socioeconomic status in society. In seeing to what extent one's socioeconomic status affects one's abilities, one's opportunities, one's power to affect change, why would we allow anyone to have a 'low' socioeconomic status? We surely wouldn't wish it on ourselves or our own children - instead, we (would) want to give them the best possible nurturing grounds - and so - this courtesy, we should extend to all in society
Within allowing such a representative system of politics, we have created a 'gap' between demos and kratia - between the people and the government - where we can in fact no longer say that it is the people who are ruling, as it is the elected government officials in the executive and legislative branches of government that are ruling - and this excludes most citizens. This gap has allowed for secrecy and rent-seeking. Instead of politics being a one-party system - in the sense that only one party is involved: the people - we are working with a three-party system - there is the people, there is the elected government officials and there is those with the financial means that participate in rent-seeking to influence policy to their own advantage, regardless of public opinion
The ambiguity embodied within the word Work reveals the gut wrenching fact that most of us experience on a daily basis: That what was supposed to be how we each contribute to a life that is best for all through our individual and unique expression has been turned into something subjugated. There is something unnatural about having to work for a living and having to buy back a life that we never bought.
* Did you know that: 7 of the richest people in the world (combined) have more money then what 567,000,000 people earned in one year? That is the estimated number of people (567 Million) who live in 41 of the world’s poorest, most indebted countries. Are we that blind, deaf, resigned, stupid, so completed consumed by self interest? As long as me and my family are ok, I can’t do anything to change that. The problem is too big for me so now I’ll go about my business and forget about those number…err…people. Yes these numbers are about real people. Shame on us.
We can learn from the elite managers of public opinion and persuasion, – Bernase, Plato, Freud, Kinsey, Rand, Brezenzki and Wells, etc. – these people understood how to steer public opinion to predetermined conclusions (from justifications for war, constant testing in our schools, survellience, pornography etc) Why don’t we do the same to steer humanity to conclusions that honor life?
"According to the Social Security Administration, 23 percent of married couples and 46 percent of single people receive 90 percent or more of their income from Social Security. Furthermore, 53 percent of married couples and 74 percent of unmarried people receive half of their income or more from the program.
Such statistics represent a group of people forever trying to make ends meet at a time when their health may be declining, their friends dying and their ability to do things not what it used to be. According to a report by AARP, the lobby for people older than 50, three out of five families headed by a retiree over 65 had no retirement savings."
We know that money is made out of thin air, there is no value inherently within the paper it’s made from, it’s simply a medium for commerce, and within this we the people give it meaning. So saying there is not enough money is a scapegoat for admitting to the fact that some want more than others, and will do what it takes to make this continue to happen as it is and has been a reality for most of our recorded history. All are responsible within this ignorance we have accepted and allowed where some go with nothing and some go with enough, we all live here and so accept this money system as it is now, so we all have to face the consequences and change the outcomes to be best for all. It’s on each one being a part of this change because nothing will not change until we stand up within ourselves and change who we are from within to the without.
One thing that we could make an effort to realize is that Human Rights at the moment is not Who We Are, we are Human Wrongs, we have to work to become Right and only when WE Become Human Rights, we can have them, we can’t have what We are Not. The only Freedom we have ever had, was the one to choose to do what is Right, to Become Human Rights and end all the harm once and for all.
This world is Our Creation, it’s not a playfield because we have long taken the fun out of it and it’s not a place where It’s All Good, that is another of the harmful delusions we hold, murder, rape, violence and all the abuses we accept Are Not Good and so it’s about time we abandon both the delusions and our Moral Relativism to realize that the work to build Human Rights is an inside job, where we accept that The Only Way Out is Within and move together to do the required work so that as We Become Human Rights, we can live them, reap them for ourselves and others Equally.
An unemployed young man set himself on fire in the center of Tunis - The extent of desperation in the world is unfathomable. We must look to ourselves and one another to the establishment of a system which will slowly but surely address and put an end to these horrific conditions which are effecting men, women, children, animals and the natural world and are rapidly accumulating grave consequences"
Community is to give as we would like to receive so that everyone has access to all the things we would want for ourselves: good housing, food and shelter. That’s the point of the Living Income Guaranteed: it is the unauthorized view of our potential, a stepping down from the manufactured into the real, from consuming and production to communing, to communicate, to build common ground. It is a deliberate transfer of resources to reprogram our world to serve common goals for all humanity, not just those sanctioned by the elite or by socialists or communists – it is non-hierarchical, it is reasonable and it is worthy of who we are and what we are capable of becoming
I just watched part one of "Big Sugar," a documentary by Brian McKenna.
The modern day slave story of the sugar plantation workers of the biggest sugar-producing companies in the world, which is an American company. The extreme difference of realities for the sugar plantation workers and the owner of the company is astounding.
Within LIG women, young women will have a real alternative to dependency on their parents/boyfriend/husband. This will reduce unwanted pregnancy in all woman of child bearing years. A LIG society will also reduce the number of abortions of all women because if one has stable income the point of building a family unit for stability and survival will be eliminated. A woman will have a real ‘choice’ to decide how they want to express themselves and contribute to their world, no longer constricted by the social situation they were born into, geography, they will indeed have all the various opportunities for a decent future that money buys.
The Living Income Guaranteed is a democratic and political movement at a global and grassroots level where ordinary people are proposing a way to empower each other through providing financial support to every individual to live in dignity, along with the information and education necessary to never again repeat the words, the behaviors, the complacency, the irresponsibility that we have used as an excuse to not see that the crimes against life have been committed by all of us as well – there’s no need to blame to a few, we’re all here, therefore we all take part in the solutions as this is the only way out of the tunnel vision survival-reality we’ve lived through until now, the key is to support one another the way that we want support to be given to us as a guaranteed right as well
A living income can be our nation’s Marshall Plan; a way to jump start a real service economy; one that serves the people. A living income is a start for those who no longer have money to pay for homes and health care; who are not contributing to the tax base, who see cuts in necessary public services like police and fire protection; who live with crime increasing; an environment that is neglected and decaying; drug and alcohol abuse, family violence and depression, the prevalence of pornography and the decline in cultural resources – all have contributed to a massive loss of faith in ourselves, our government and what we believe can accomplish. A living income is the start; a service we can gift ourselves as a start to a real Service economy.
Through implementing a Guaranteed Living Income System, parents would thus be able to stay at home with their children, as they would not be slave-bound to work in an economic system built on debt. This would also mean that the decision to have a child would be able to be made with much greater consideration for both the child and one’s own well being as the responsibility of the child would be in the hands of the parents.
In the west, our lack of understanding and our inaction comes largely from information control and manipulation, but when we are talking about a country with money and resources through which the individual tends to be more enabled and have more opportunity, ignorance is more of a choice – whereas in Thailand there is a large amount of information control on the internet and in media in general, and again very limiting economic conditions – many people genuinely don’t know what they don’t know and have no way of ever finding out, and thus have very little chance or opportunity of being able to help themselves.
It is our collectively accepted gullibility to believe in this illusion of freedom that is justifying the continuation of the harmful consequential reality of our apparent 'free market' economic system. I say 'apparent', because even though many economists would claim that our current market system is 'free', they are actually just doing so because they know that words like 'free' have been given a special place in human being's minds and that we will immediately accept without question things that apparently honour 'freedom'. As specialist in economics Ha-Joon Chang eloquently explains in his book '23 Things they don't tell you about Capitalism', our society would never have evolved past child and slave labor (in theory)if it wasn't for government intervention - because, if our market system was truly 'free', things like human trafficking, child pornography, child labor and slave labor would all be 'legal'.
